Crafting Fail

Now that we have all the stuff in the nursery, I've been starting to work on the decorations. We have 2 things already, one from my mom and one from a friend. I have had the plan for the last 3 in motion since November, but needed some down time to work on it. We had friends in town from yesterday til today, but I did several hours of prep work yesterday and then about 6 hours today after they left.

And I ruined almost all of my work on the last step. :(

I made a paper craft, and it looked awesome. Even Mike was oohing and ahhing over it. The last step was to stick all 3 pictures to the 12x12 canvases that I bought. I used Mod Podge, as I have for many other things. But because some of the colors of paper I used were brandex, the mod podge saturated it which made it stretch out and then made it bumpy and ugly. So my 4 hours of cutting and taping and my hour of painting the canvas are down the drain. ARGH.

I'm just going to re-cut all the papers tomorrow, so that I only have to re-do the 4 hours of labor. The 3 hours I spent on the pattern yesterday aren't wasted because at least I can re-create it. Then I'll just frame the damn things instead of putting them on the canvas. Even though that was going to be the best part. I am so annoyed at myself!!! :(

Another Cross Post

Once there's a baby on the outside, I'm only keeping up one blog. But since I want the other blog to be the whole pregnancy, I'm cross posting with links until that happens.

Funny things kids have said in the last couple weeks ....

Super Hydration!

Due to my exciting morning in L&D (http://jlsh935.blogspot.com/2013/02/first-real-trip-to-l.html) I have spent today drinking a lot of water and Gatorade.

And eating Red Velvet White Chocolate Chip cookies from my friend, but that was just for fun.

One bonus of accidentally being home today is that I got to watch the live stream of the the Knot.com's Dream Wedding and see my friend and her mom in the audience. (They were there as relatives!) I also took a nap and watched some things on the DVR. Hubby stayed home with me after I got released even though I told him he could go back to work. I feel bad because he found out he was supposed to have his surprise work baby shower today. Bummer for him!

One upside of today's event is that the doc did everything in triage that he would have done at tonight's appointment, so I didn't have to go back at 4pm. Small bonuses!

The second draft of my book is in the hands of the editor now and I'm just waiting to see what the next step is and what else needs tweaking. I love the idea of editors because they exist to help me make things better!

Baby wise, we pretty much have everything we need except a baby. A couple things are in the mail still that we purchased with gift cards online, but other than that we are as ready as we'll ever be. The glider does need to be assembled at some point but it's in the building. The crib skirt material has been purchased but it's still in a bag. That's on my list but not my super important list.

The boys are supposed to jump out of a plane on Saturday, but now they're anticipating our next weather event to hit at that time. They're running out of time for that because the groupons expire soon!

Couch Day

I have been on the couch ALL day. This time not for physical reasons, just because I had nowhere else to go today. I've been working on the book and taking mental breaks to play Sugar Candy Crush and all its friends. Very exciting, I tell you.

The current non-event status of the baby growing has led to much less frequent updating of that blog, too.

Snowy Writing Day

When I was a junior in high school, I had two English teachers that drove me batty. Even though I missed a lot of time that year and didn't necessarily see these teachers every day (different one for each semester), the angst of being in those classrooms is still with me. It was almost lucky that I had a home & hospital tutor during my fibromyalgia flare because she was able to help me prepare for the days I was there and to navigate the insanity. :)

When it came to class discussions, we had to earn "dots." You got a dot if you said something smart, unique, and actually added something to the conversation rather than just reiterating what someone else had said. (Our social studies teacher must have heard them mentioning this as well, but translated it into his own version, because he gave a "dot" just for raising your hand. He would ask a question, almost everyone would raise their hand, and he would use his pen to make dots all over the seating chart showing that we were participating. Then you just had to hope you didn't really get called on. Of course if you did, there was no penalty for not knowing the answer. Easy!)

So anyway, back to the "dots." Nobody liked the dots. Everyone worried about the dots. I didn't understand most of what we read that year, so I didn't often have something smart to say. The benefit of being a nerd is that while the Internet was in its infancy (1995/1996!) we could search for information about all these great classic books and then tweak the information to make it sound like it came out of our own brains. The teacher had already memorized the Cliff Notes and if you said something from there, you were wrong, not smart, and you lost a dot. Even if you hadn't read the CN for fear of that happening and just happened to say something that was in there, because, you know, the CN *did* make some sense and explain some things! It got to the point where I seriously bought a Cliff Notes guide to a book just to make sure I wasn't saying anything that was in there. She may have memorized the Cliff Notes, but she probably didn't even know about the Internet. We didn't steal completely or anything, we just used the websites we found to make sense of the confusing books and then made our own judgments and decisions.

ANYWAY.

Discussions were hard, but writing was even harder. Whenever we wrote an essay (in 5 paragraph thesis form but of course) the first thing we had to hand in was a sentence outline that passed the "because test."

What is the because test? I'm so very glad you asked.

I. This is the point I'm trying to make and I'm very sure it is correct....BECAUSE ....
     A. Of this reason. I'm very sure this reason is a good one ... BECAUSE
          1. Of this quote from the book. Which is a good quote BECAUSE...
               a. With my own explanation and analysis, but of course.
          2. And this quote too, which is a good quote BECAUSE
               b. Which of course I can explain and analyze deeply as well.
          3. And this quote because what good is it if I don't have 3 quotes? which is a good final quote BECAUSE
               c. Which I follow up with another spectacular (CN Free) analysis and description leading into a wonderful transition sentence into the next paragraph/reason.

So yeah. Then your rough draft was pretty much that outline without the letters, numbers, and periods. I never understood that.

Which brings me to my original point of writing this today, because it's the point that is on my mind.

The verb "to be."

On top of all that other stuff, we couldn't use any form of the verb "to be" in our papers. Is, was, were, etc. In reality, I could almost always find another way to write it, but there are so many forms of that word that I couldn't always find them and I always lost points for it.

I do not always follow this rule in my everyday writing because that would be impossible. I don't think about it when I'm typing on here, for example. (I should go back and count them. I'm sure it's embarrassingly high.) However, I am currently under contract to write a book. It's a short one, part of a set about different research skills for elementary kids. The opportunity arose from the editor of the book I had lesson plans in last year. So now as I sit here on my free day off from school and work on it, ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT is how they'll think I'm an awful writer if I have any form of that verb in my writing. I don't even necessarily think it's true, but it is ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT.

So I blogged about it instead. Now hopefully it's out of my brain and I can get back to being productive. :)

It's Sunday - And The Weekend Isn't Over!

I don't want to brag, but I got to run 3 errands IN A ROW yesterday. And today, I am going to 2 places in a row! (Unless place #1 has everything I need, in which case I will just come home.) Last weekend I was the recipient of a lovely baby shower and next weekend I get to reciprocate by throwing a shower for her! I also  found out on Friday about a really awesome opportunity in library land that I'm trying to fast track in the 7ish weeks I have remaining before the baby gets here. Hopefully I can fast track without losing quality so that I can make it happen. I have a thousand work things to do for Tuesday morning because I also have to fit in my year's worth of observations into not-a-year. Missing 12 weeks of work takes out about a third of a 180 day school year (almost exactly, because my 12 weeks falls into a time frame where there are almost no days off!) and that means squeezing a lot in. I'm also working on projects for next weekend so what's a better way to procrastinate than to spend time writing here?

Home Improvements To The Max

The home improvements around here are like a never ending chain of insanity. The spare bedroom (aka Junk Room for the past 3 years) has been white walls with light gray carpet. I was totally happy leaving it that way because whatever we put on the walls could be our theme. We decided not to register for baby bedding because so many of the pieces are not usable, so whatever goes on the walls is about as far as any theming will go. However, as I began to clean out the room's many MANY boxes, and the carpet came back into view, we re-realized how disgusting the carpet really is in there. The room was a teen boy's room in the last family and at some point he had 3 neon blue walls with one bright orange accent wall. I'm guessing he painted it himself or at least helped, because there is a ton of paint on the floors in those colors. Then they must have painted it white to sell it, but there's a ton of white paint on the floor too. In addition, there's gum or something equally sticky matting down the carpet in several places. Soooooo, we decided that instead of just steaming it as had been our plan, we will just replace it. Now we need to decide and figure out if it's financially adventagous to do our room or stairs at the same time since the carpet guys will be here. That's all happening tomorrow.

So since we knew the yucky carpet was soon to leave the house, Mike decided that maybe we should paint, and if we do we should do it ASAP so it's done before the carpet switch. So that happened yesterday. It's kind of aqua-ish and could totally work for either gender with various decorations. When prepping to paint, I started unscrewing the plates over the light switch and outlets and to my surprise, one of the outlet covers had been painted (with that lovely bright blue and then white) paint directly to the wall and to the plastic outlet pieces. So when I popped it off, it blew the whole upstairs circuit. Luckily I was far enough away that the spark avoided me, but it scared the bejeezus out of me. Mike got it put back on safely and an electrician is coming tomorrow to check that and a few more things that we've been putting off. (Like the fact that when it rains on a windy day, the GFI upstairs flips and the garage door ceases to go up and down. It's awesome!)

SO that's what up these days, in addition to surviving the stomach bug this week, which I hail as my #2 accomplishment during this pregnancy - second only to making it this far! :)
