The Illness That Took Down Our Family

Last Thursday, our friends had the worst day ever and then it ended with their kid getting the tummy bug. As soon as I knew their kid had it, I figured it was in our kid's future because they spend 40 hours a week in the same building. And indeed, 48 hours later our kid got it. And thus began A VERY LONG WEEK THAT IS NOT OVER YET.

(Warning - I'm writing this down now because I've had to recreate this timeline multiple times for multiple health care people. It's way too TMI.)

Saturday AM: Kid woke up with a cold and runny nose. Disappointing because we had the picture lady coming for his 1 year pictures, but she said Photoshop could take care of that. (And it did - we saw a sneak peek of a shot and no snot to be seen!) During his photoshoot, he did NOT want to touch the cute little cake that she brought for him. It was like old school January baby. "Don't make me touch it! Food is icky!" Very irrational and weird considering he smashed cake a week earlier and handled it just fine. He spit up when we tried to feed him some. Not the hugest gush ever, but bigger than we had dealt with in weeks. Annoying. No change in behavior yet.

Saturday PM: Hubby went to the gym and the kid puked all over me and then his attitude and behavior changed immediately. When he has a regular Derek puke, it doesn't really faze him, but this made him mad as soon as it happened. He cried, I washed him (and me) off, and texted hubby to bring home Pedialyte. It proceeded to happen every 60 minutes until late that night.

Saturday late PM: Finally stopped and was able to keep down Pedialyte. He slept in his chair, we slept on the couches, and syringed Pedialyte into him every time he woke up which was a lot.

Sunday: Starting acting a bit more normal, didn't give him much food, didn't want many bottles, just kept him hydrated. Ate more as the day went on.

Monday: I went to work, the boys stayed home for their normal Monday boys day. Ate morning bottle, then an hour later spit up everywhere. We thought it was a relapse because he did get a 99 temperature for the first time during this ordeal. Went back to very little food, mostly baby food but also some cheerios, still wasn't digging his bottles. The doctor said to do 1/2 formula and 1/2 pedialyte. He preferred just pedialyte but we got some down.

Tuesday: Woke up back to his normal temp. I took the day off to stay home with him and he was pretty perky. He ate ok, not a ton but showed interest. As the day went on, he ate more and more. Felt he was perky enough and healthy enough to go to school Wednesday. Everyone was ok at dinner, but 2 things happened. I pinched a nerve or threw out my back or something along those lines and starting feeling a lot of pain if I tried to pick up the baby at all. Then hubby got the stomach bug. I left him in our room and took the baby monitor and all my stuff far far away in attempts to stay alive.

Wednesday: Hubby stayed home sick, we went to daycare and school. Daycare fed him a regular day's amount of food and then he spit up all over daycare. They are new girls to his world and didn't realize that was normal for him and not necessarily illness. I convinced them that I really didn't think he was sick, I thought this was just his reflux rearing its ugly head after illness. They were skeptical. Of course then they gave him a full bottle and it happened again. (Even if it isn't sickness related, we don't fill him up right after it happens!) Of course the 2nd time it was all over the car. Yay. Cleaning up the car isn't fun to start with, but it's even worse with a really sick husband who can't help and a pinched nerve that is inhibiting my ability to lift even my laptop bag, let alone a carseat covered in formula spit up. I called the regular pediatrician and they said just continue with bland food and that they were willing to believe this was the reflux coming back, being triggered by being sick so many times on Saturday, and that hopefully it wouldn't last long.

Thursday: I got a (thankfully) mild version of the bug so all 3 of us stayed home. Baby was pretty much ok, still a little sleepy but over all ok. I have no idea how daycare got him to eat so much on Wed because he didn't have a huge appetite with us. But he ate and we survived. It is no fun being sick, really no fun being sick and in pain, and really really no fun being sick and in pain with a kid crawling everywhere. We barricaded him into one room but it was still hard. An hour after dinner, he got sick all over me when getting ready for bed. We just don't understand why we're back to this reflux situation.

Friday: I went back to work and the boys stayed home. Hubby was staying home in attempts to eat real food and decided to keep the baby home. We still don't think he has the bug anymore, but me getting him in and out of the car was proving to be problematic. I would have made it work somehow if we were all going to work today, but since Hubby was staying home we left the kid home too. I talked to the GI doctor today to get their take on the whole situation. They diagnosed him with "post viral gastroparesis" which basically means his digestion slowed down which leads to super full stomach which leads to sickness. They called in a medicine to our pharmacy. Unfortunately although I love my pharmacy and the people, they don't have every random med out there and this is one they didn't have in baby form. They were kind enough to find a Rite Aid nearby that had it and so I picked it up there. Of course the stuff smells horrible and I imagine tastes just as bad and the first dose made him ... you guessed it ... spit up everything. ARGH. The GI on call suggested putting it in food. We did that, but we're hoping that doesn't turn him off this food after all we have done to get him to eat food to start with.

Silver lining - he can go to daycare and spit up there because he doesn't have the stomach bug!

Future: Hopefully this medicine works sooner than later. He's back off dairy until it's under control because we need to know whether the dairy is causing the symptoms. He hasn't had any dairy since the bug started. This means he can't eat daycare food and we have to go back to the old way, which is frustrating because he was finally getting good at accepting other things!
